Make space for play
How a couple of friends inspired me to clear my studio to record a mix last week
It’s hard to justify play when you’re exhausted. Even harder when your decks are buried under a pile of crap.

Last week, a friend shared how he was too tired from work to play guitar, which led to some interesting probing that reminded me of my own resistances to play.
The next day, a friend sent me an Ezra Collective track on a sunny day.

I cleared just enough space in my messy studio to get to my decks, pulled a Big Bud promo from the wrong sleeve, and just played.
No setlist. About an hour. Whatever records I could reach.
Clearing that space was something I have been thinking about for ages, but a mix of procrastination and other ‘important’ things was getting in the way of my ‘joy’/
Sometimes the barrier isn’t motivation, it’s the wrong sort of friction. Lower that friction, and make space for play.
You can hear my little narrative here if you’d like. Including a weird timelapse I did to keep me ‘accountable’ while tidying the space.
And this is the (rough round the edges) 90s musical drum and bass mix I made.
